Fall 2007 Wrap Up

NIU Fall Classic Champions
Returning to the NIU Tournament for the first time since 2004, the Wisconsin team was victorious at the 20th Annual Fall Classic, beating a tough Purdue team 7-5 in the final. Wisconsin came back from a 2 goal deficeit to tie going into the fourth period - scoring 2 in the fourth to take the Championship. Tournament MVP - Julian DeFranco - was in top form on the field through out the tournament. This was Julian's last game as well - directing the team defense and making an inspirational talk to the the team going in to the decisive final period. Dominating face offs and ball control, Josh Cohen was the Offensive MVP with scoring from many other players. To get to the Championship game, Wisconsin had to go through a difficult bracket, beating Whitewater 13-3, DePaul 8-5, and Illinois State 11-4.

The come from behind victory by the Wisconsin Red Team capped a very good 12-2 Fall season. The NIU win followed a frustrating one goal loss in overtime to the Laker's Men's club 9-8 in the Championship game at the Minnesota Hotdish Tournament The Wisconsin Red Team got to the Championship by beating the Minneapolis Men's club 8-3, St John's 7-5, and the Minnesota NorthStars Men's Club 7-3. The White Team came in fourth in the B Division. They beat River Falls 6-3, and Bethel 6-4, and lost to St Olafs 5-3.

The following weekend we hosted 20 teams at the 7th Annual Mad City Tournament featuring teams from 7 states: Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. The Red team was in a very difficult bracket, beating a very good Missouri Team 8-5, then losing an exceptionally close 8-7 against an excellent Ohio State Team. Ohio State went on to beat DePaul 12-0 in the Championship game. while Wisconsin took Third by beating Illinois state 8-4 for Third place.

The White team lost the B Division Championship to St Thomas 7-3 after victories against Western Illinois 6-5 and Eau Claire 6-4. The White Team's record for the fall was 7-2.

Due to an exceptionally large turnout Wisconsin also sponsored a third Black team this fall. The very inexperienced team was highly competitive and finished with a 2-3 record - all very close games.

The team is planning to enter all 3 squads in the spring Great Lakes Lacrosse League and is hoping to host the Championship Tournament April 26/27 in Madison. The team is also planning to return to the Mardi Gras Tournament this January.

The Wisconsin Lacrosse Team finished it's best year ever with an undefeated spring record of 11-0. This completed a year in which Wisconsin was 25 -1 and capped a two year record of 53-2. The 13 seniors who graduated this [ including 8 starters] year left a legacy that will be hard to surpass and a standard of competitive excellence that we will have to work hard to sustain. The high point of the year was our Big Ten Championship over Michigan State in triple overtime, our second consecutive Mad City Tournament victory, and our third consecutive Great Lakes Lacrosse League Championship. Victories over Ohio state, Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue, N. Michigan, W. Michigan, Illinios State, and Mankato State as well as Michigan State demonstrated the capacity to win against many of the Midwest's stronger programs. The Badger team finished a solid 15-8 year as well.

We will be needing a strong showing from our underclassmen and incoming freshman to continue the winning tradition. Please contact Coach Hal Rosenberg Hal 608.772.4298 if you are new to the program.
